Let's dream beyond what we know.
The United States is the greatest incarcerator in the world. One of the most prevalent indicators of the American obsession with punishment is the inhumane practice of solitary confinement. Solitary confinement is a punitive strategy for control, not rehabilitation, and is denounced as torture by human rights watchdogs around the world. If we consider prisons as confinement with in our society, then isolation cells are the most concentrated form of punishment and therefore perhaps, the most important target to counter mass incarceration, over-sentencing, and our socialized addiction to retribution.
In a society whose imagination is crippled by personal and collective trauma, it is equally as important to illustrate what is wrong with systems of punishment and control, as well as what is possible.
This project will provide a foundation for both.
